The call to arms as kids reluctantly begin the process of lathering up their skin with SPF promises of protection, their eyes set on attacking the sprinklers and diving into deep ends. Three years removed from The Civil War, a group of veterans organized a day dedicated to decorating the graves of those who died in war. This Decoration Day would later be officially commissioned as the national day of remembrance we all know as Memorial Day.
Too often we view our present-day obstacles through a clouded filter. At times we forget the path cleared that allowed us to sit in the privilege of today. The act of forgetfulness unintentionally creates space and division within our system of values. As we forget, we fail.
In 1868 President James Garfield addressed a nation:
“We do not know one promise these men made, one pledge they gave, one word they spoke: but we do know they summed up and perfected, by one supreme act, the highest virtues of men and citizens. For love of country, they accepted death.”
As a nation, we must remember those who accepted death so that we can be free. The men and women and; that one supreme act. We must remember and remain in a humble posture of thanks.
“but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:14
As an individual, you must not forget the One who accepted death so that you can be free. That one supreme act for the love of mankind. You must remember and remain in Him. His posture of love, arms east to west. His eyes set on you, His invitation to take a dive into the deep end.
